  Pingyao is famous for its city walls, which were constructed almost 700 years ago and became a World Heritage Site in 1997. The city walls take the pattern of a turtle, which earns Pingyao the moniker "Turtle City". Also, Pingyao was a financial center of China during Qing Dynasty, where some compounds of rich squires are still remained to showcase their wealth at that time.
