Baotou Travel Guide - Brief Information on Baotou
Baotou is one of the biggest cities in Inner Mongolia. Its name in Chinese means ‘Deer City’ but it is also called the ‘Steel City on the Grassland’. Baotou is located in the middle part of Inner Mongolia. It governs 11 banners, counties and districts. The population of Baotou is 2.46 million, inhabiting an area of 27768 square kilometers, and made up of about 31 nationalities, including the Meng, Han, Hui, Man, and Elunchun ethnic minorities.
Baotou has the continental monsoon sub-arid climate of the middle latitude temperate zone. Here, the scenery is nice and the temperature is moderate: indeed, the yearly average is 8.5 degrees centigrade and the yearly rainfall is 262.9mm. It is an ideal resort to escape to from the hot summer and the best seasons to travel to Baotou are summer and autumn.
As early as 5000 years ago, there were humans living in Baotou. Up until Emperor Qian Long of the Qing Dynasty, Baotou was a village with two small streets. In 1809, Baotou village became Baotou town. In 1923, the Pinsui (now called Jing-Bao) railway was extended to Baotou. Then, Baotou became an important business town in northwestern China. In 1926, it became Baotou County and, 12 years later in 1938, Baotou City.
Baotou’s tourism resources are abundant and unique. The city’s cultural heritage has been shaped by modern industry but it still has considerable natural scenery: beautiful grassland landscapes, the peculiar scenery of the Yellow River, and the unique desert are all highlights.
Baotou is an important transportation hub connecting northern and northwestern China. The comprehensive transportation network of railways, highways and airlines has greatly improved the lives of local people and brought more visitors than ever to Baotou.
