Located on the central axle of Beijing City, Drum Tower was responsible for telling time before the advent of watches and clocks. Destroyed in 1654 by fire, Drum Tower was reconstructed in the Qianlong Period and repaired in 1800.
Facing due south, Drum Tower with its two-storey construction is a typical wooden pavilion piece of architecture, sitting on a 4-meter-high stone and brick base. The first floor contains the China Committee for the Promotion of Minority Art, while the second floor is an exhibition area. Initially, there was one big drum and 24 small drums, but only the big drum has been preserved.
