Brief information on Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty

The Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty, located in Zunhua City of Hebei Province, 125 kilometers from Beijing, is the largest extant imperial mausoleum complex in China. The complex holds the tombs of 5 emperors, 15 empresses, 137 concubines and 4 princesses. Here, all tombs center on Xiaoling, the tomb of Emperor Shunzhi, and stand in order at its sides. In 2000, because of its important historical, artistic and scientific value, it was listed among the World Cultural Heritage Sites. A U.N. expert evaluated the Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty as a human being’s creative work of genius.

The site of Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty is auspicious according to the principles of feng shui:,it takes a hill as its shield in the north, faces a distant hill and close mound in the south, is guarded by hills in the east and west, and contains a wide plain with a winding river in the middle.

The constructions in the Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty complex are of exceptional grandness, magnificence, and fineness. The most imposing ones feature the widest stone arch in China, the longest main soul road, delicate Buddhist stone sculptures, and a gilded hall,. Historically, it was looted many times and destroyed badly. Therefore, a great many rare cultural relics were lost. When the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, the Eastern Tombs of the Qing Dynasty finally began to be protected.

Nowadays, the tombs open to visitors include Yuling, where Emperor Qianlong was buried, and the tombs of two empress dowagers as well as that of the imperial concubine.
