With more than one thousand years of history, Fayuan Temple was initially called Minzhong Temple, and it was established to commemorate a general who died on the battlefield during the Tang Dynasty, although it was not completed until 696 AD. During the course of its long and tumultuous history, the temple has been renamed many times, and it was given the title of ‘Fayuan’ in 1734, a name which suggests it is the source of dharma – the teachings of the Buddha. Fayuan Temple has an important place in Chinese history. It consists of temple gate bell and drum towers, the Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Baodian, Minzhong Platform, Jingye Hall, Wuliang Hall, Dabei Altar, Scripture Pavilion, Dabianjue Hall, and long corridors that run east and west, in order from south to north. It is known as the most historic ancient temple complex in Beijing.
