Song Qingling was one of the three Song sisters, who, along with their husbands, were amongst China’s most significant political figures of the early 20th century. Song Qingling was the Vice Chairman of the People’s Republic of China. She was the first woman not of royal blood to officially become head of state of China, acting as Co-Chairman of the Republic from 1968 until 1972.
Located at the north edge of the charming Shichahai, the former residence of Song Qingling is an elegant and quiet courtyard. Covering an area of about 20,000 square meters, the yard was repaired on the site of the west garden of the last emperor of China, Pu Yi. The two-story main building emphasizes the combination of western and Chinese styles. Song Qingling lived and worked here for 18 years. The residence still retains the original appearance of Madame Song’s living area, and it was opened to the public in 1982.
