Brief information on Mutianyu Great Wall

Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou County, about 70 kilometers northeast of downtown Beijing. It is connected with Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou Great Wall in the east. It defended both the capital and the imperial tombs as the northernmost barrier against nomadic tribes.

This section of the Great Wall was first built in the mid-6th century during the Northern Qi Dynasty, and reconstruction work was carried out in 1569 in order to shore up the wall’s defensive capability. Most parts of the Mutianyu Great Wall remain well preserved to this day. ?The wall is constructed from granite, and is about 7-8 meters high and 4-5 meters wide, and possesses some unique characteristics: both the outer and inner parapets are crenelated with merlons so that defending soldiers could fire on an advancing enemy from either side. There are 22 watchtowers situated in close proximity, and this section of the Great wall winds through the mountains, and is surrounded by woodland and streams.

Today, Mutianyu Great Wall is open to the public, and visitors can enjoy a breathtaking cable car journey to take in the sites, thereby avoided any danger of fatigue. Tourists can also climb aboard a toboggan named ’Speed’, and experience the thrill of careening down from the highest point, set against the backdrop of the Great Wall and stunning countryside.
