Prince Gong’s Mansion is the largest and best-preserved Beijing residence of this prince from the Qing Dynasty. In 1851, Emperor Xianfeng granted the mansion to Prince Gong. ??
There were strict regulations dictating the layout of a prince’s mansion during the Qing Dynasty: there should be five entrances, seven main halls, five back halls and seven living halls. Many yards have a back garden, but visitors have a unique opportunity to appreciate the archetypal and exquisite period layout of Prince Gong’s mansion, as most of the yards were either altered or destroyed during the course of history.
As mentioned, Prince Gong’s Mansion features a back garden, also named Cuijin Garden. According to some textual research, the garden was built on the site during the Ming Dynasty. Prince Gong assembled many skilled craftsmen to set the rockery, bridges, grassland, flowers and water features, which displays the delicate complexity of Southern Chinese garden art, Northern Chinese architectural arrangement, Western architectural style as well as the overall impression of an ancient Chinese garden.
