Shichahai is a very famous scenic area and consists of three lakes, known as: Front Sea, West Sea and the Back Sea. Around the lake are ten famous Taoist and Buddhist temples, so it is called “Shichahai” (literally, ten temple sea). There are also several royal residences and gardens, the most well known of which is the Prince Gong Mansion and the Prince Chun Mansion. Around Shichahai, there are a lot of residences, Hutongs and Courtyards in the old Beijing style which cover a large area of 146.7 hectares. So Shichahai is one of the best places to view best-preserved Hutongs and courtyards by riding in rickshaws.
Shichahai is really a perfect area for people to relax. People can stroll along the lake, rent paddle boats to go out onto the lake in, and skate on the ice. In 1992 the municipal government of Beijing declared Shichahai to be a "Historical and Cultural Scenic Area".
