Underground City is factually a former military facility, constructed as bomb shelter. It was built in the 1960s and work stopped in 1979. The tunnel has a capacity of about 300,000. If it was necessary in wartime, the tunnel would lead to some hospitals and major rail links. Facilities in the tunnel would ensure the long-term survival of people living there. Now, Underground City has become China’s largest bomb shelter tunnel.
