Dongsi Commercial Area

There were four wooden archways standing at the four sides of Shizi St. crossing in Ming Dynasty, additionally, Shizi St. was situated at the eastern part of the imperial city. The place was called Dong (east) si (four) Archway, and short for Dongsi. The archways were knocked down for some reasons, but the name has been used all along.

Dongsi Commercial Area indicates the region covering Dongsi South Avenue, Dongsi North Avenue, Dongsi West Avenue and the street inside Chaoyang Gate. Dongsi South Avenue boasts the famed four gold shops. There are more than 200 stores located on South Avenue and North Avenue, among which, Dongsi Department Store, Yong’antang Drug Store, Sanyou Department Store and some time-honored restaurants are recommended.
