Changchun Travel Guide - Brief Information on Changchun

As the capital city of Jilin in northeast of China, Changchun is the province’s center of politics, economy, and culture.  Located in the center of Northeast China Plain, the city had a population of 7.5 million by the end of 2007, with 3.6 million in the urban areas.

Covering a total area of 20,604 square kilometers, Changchun contains 6 districts in its urban areas, including Nanguan, Chaoyang, Luyuan, Kuancheng, Erdao, and Shuangyang. And in particular, Changchun has four special zones that represent the fast growth of the city. They are Changchun Economic and Technological Development Zone, Changchun Automotive Economic Trade and Development Zone, Changchun Hi-tech Industry Development Zone, and Changchun Jingyue Economic Development Zone.

Changchun is frequented by the auto industry and film industry. The 59-year-old FAW Group is based there, as well as Changchun Film Studio. Foodstuffs, photo-electronic information, and biology and medicine also drive up the city’s economy. In an effort to boost the auto industry, the city established a development zone called Changchun Automotive Economic Trade and Development Zone.

In 2007, the city achieved a GDP of CNY 208.9 billion. Output of primary industry increased by 8.6% eventually to CNY 20 billion; secondary industry up 22.1% to CNY 104.9 billion; and tertiary industry up 14.5% to CNY 84 billion.

Situated in northeast China, Changchun is cold in winter, especially from December to February. However, winter is the most beautiful season in Changchun, where the city is covered with thick snow. Tourists will be deeply impressed by the “snow world” there, as well as the characteristic north China scenery.

Changchun residents enjoys convenient transportation. Changchun Longjia International Airport, which opened in 2005, serves as the main civilian airport for both Changchun and Longjia. You can get to 20 cities all over the country from the airport, such as Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. In addition, railway transportation there is available to almost all cities of China.
