The world-renowned Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Base is situated in Futou Mountain, 10km (6miles) north of downtown Chengdu downtown. The Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Base covers an area of 560 mu (92 acres), and serves a vital purpose for the protection and continuation of Giant Pandas. The center has plans to expand by another 3000 mus (500 acres) to simulate a better natural environment to breed the giant pandas and other animals, before releasing them into the wild.
The base is replete with indispensable equipment for all kinds of breeding and research regarding Giant Pandas, such as rooms for the animals, feeding rooms, clinics, a Giant Panda Museum and research building, as well as huge bamboo plants and bushes for the Giant Pandas. All of this is designed to simulate a natural habitat for the animals at the base. The center does not only cater to the Giant Panda, but also to many other rare and endangered animals, such aslesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks as well as over 20 species of other rare animals. Therefore, Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, with verdant bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air, a natural hill scene and a beautiful artificial view, is more like a large natural wild animal museum.
The Giant Panda Museum, opened in 1993, aims to spread scientific education and raise public awareness with regard to the protection of wild animals and their environment. It is, in fact, the only museum for rare and endangered animal species in the world. There are three main halls, namely, the Giant Panda Hall, the Butterfly Hall and the Vertebrate Hall. A variety of information, pictures, models, fossils and samples are displayed there.
