Brief information on Dujiangyan Irrigation Project  

Situated in the west of Dujiangyan City, Sichuan Province, next to the Min River, Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is one of the oldest irrigation projects in the world. The project was built in 256 BC, and then changed its name into Dujiangyan in 1335. The project was built for irrigating crops more than 2,000 years ago in ancient China, utilizing the natural water resources and the geography features perfectly.

There are many historical relics and beautiful sceneries along the Dujiangyan Dam; also a good place for a visit. Of these, the most famous are the Erwang Temple, Fulong Temple, and the Anlansuo Bridge.

Erwang Temple was built into the slope of the mountain on the right bank of the Min River, facing the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project. The temple was first built as a memorial for the King in the Sichuan area, and then was rebuilt for Li Bing and his son in 494 A.D., who were believed to have built the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project. Later, Li Bing and his son were themselves conferred as kings. The temple was then named ‘Erwang’ which in Chinese means ‘Two Kings’. At present, the father’s and son’s statues are standing in the middle of the temple along with their mottoes and inscriptions.

Fulong Temple is situated in Lidui Park. Legend has it that it was here Li Bing subdued an evil dragon when building the project. The Anlansuo Bridge was built before the Song Dynasty, and was considered as one of the five greatest bridges of ancient China.
