Brief information on Tomb of Wangjian  

Located in the northwest centre of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, Wangjian Tomb, also called Yong Tomb, is the tomb of Wangjian the Emperor of Former Shu in Five Dynasties. Wangjian (847-918 AD) was originally a brave general during the Tang Dynasty and had been conferred as “Shu Wang”; the leader of the Sichuan area by Emperor Zhaozong. Later he established the Former Shu kingdom after the fall of the Tang Dynasty. He was buried in Chengdu after his death.

Wangjian Tomb was robbed of its treasures over time, and only the buildings and stone carvings remain as they were unable to be moved out. These can be regarded as the artistic flower of mausoleum construction. Wangjian Tomb was discovered and excavated in 1942, and now it is open to the public for visit. The tomb is divided into three sections with 14 stone doors. It is a huge tomb with Wangjian’s coffin in the middle, 12 handsome and strong soldiers’ statues on each side holding the coffin with different postures and expressions. There are several paintings of 24 music players with different folk music instruments on three sides of the coffin, namely, east, south and west. These paintings are precious antiques for studying the musical history of th Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, and consequently attracts many experts all over the world.
