Brief information on Residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell  

Occupying an area of 7.2 mu (about 1.2 acres), the Residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell was established to  commemorate Joseph W. Stilwell, an American general who made a significant contribution to China and her people during the Second World War. The museum was opened to the public in 1991, and receives tens of thousands of domestic and foreign visitors every year. William Pace, a former American Secretary of Defense, paid a special visit to the museum in 1994 and was greatly moved by the real-life scenarios depicted within and also by the excellence of the building’s preservation. The museum has been rebuilt and expanded several times, but still maintains its original style.

General Joseph W. Stilwell was commanded to come to Chongqing in 1942.  As Chief of Staff in the Chinese Theater of Operations and  Commander-in-Chief of the American Army in the Chinese, Burmese and Indian Theaters (CBI), he worked in his residence, which became the headquarters of the CBI Theater during that period. General Stilwell took a series of military and political measures in the CBI theatre which served to strengthen the Sino-US relationship.

The main building of the residence is a three-storey villa, including an office, an adjutant room, two meeting rooms, bedrooms and a basement. The living room is simply furnished, and also houses some household facilities, as well as the General’s manuscripts and clothes. There is also a statue at the front of the building.
