Brief information on Three Pagodas  

With a history of over 1,800 years, Three Pagodas, about 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) northwest of the ancient Dali city, located on the foot of the beautiful Cangshan Mountain, bank of the Erhai Lake. Like the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian, the Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei province, the Three Pagoda is also a treasure in Chinese architecture history, and was listed in China’s most important historical sites. It is regarded as the symbol of Dali city and recorded the Buddhism development in this area.
As the name goes, Three pagodas consist  of three ancient independent pagodas forming a triangle together. Paying a visit to Three Pagodas is a must when get to Dali since this kind of Buddhism pagodas as well as the architecture style is rare in China.
The main pagoda stands in the middle with a height of 69.31 meters, is one of the highest pagodas built in Tang dynasty, and the material used for this pagoda is mainly bricks. The other two lower pagodas (were built in 1950s ) standing next to the main pagoda in each side which both 42.19 meters high. Many sculptures of Buddha made of wood or crystal, silver, gold. Buddhist readings, and more than 600 various medicinal ingredients were found in the main Pagoda, which plays an important role in explaining the ancient history of Dali City. Study of Three Pagodas and the cultural relics that have been excavated at the site, provide significant data for exploring the history, religion, and art of this area.
Nearby, many folk-craft workshops specializing in marble and brick-painting shows the special flavor in Yunnan.
