As the name suggests, the Shanhua Monastery otherwise known as South Monastery lies in the south of the town. The construction commenced in 8th Century during the Tang Dynasty. In 1122, the war caused a major destruction and was rebuilt between 1128 and 1145.
The magnificent Shanhua Monastery consists of a set of well-preserved buildings of Liao Dynasty. It stands facing south with a gate in front, three Holy Halls in the middle and the Great Buddha’s Hall in the back. The Wenshu Pavilion and Puxian Pavilion are on both sides of the Great Buddha’s Hall. Among Liao and Jin Temples existing today, this monastery is the one with bilateral symmetry layout.
