Dongguan, which sits between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, is one of the major economic engines in Guangdong Province. It borders the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the north, Huizhou to the northeast, Shenzhen to the south and the Pearl River to the west. It is 47 sea miles from Hong Kong and 48 sea miles from Macau.

Besides Dongguan’s advantageous geographical location, the city is an active area of electronics manufacturing. In 2008, it produced 168.81 billion yuan of communications equipment, computers and other electronic devices, a 6.5% increase from the previous year. Companies manufacturing large-sized electronics achieved a production value of 277.5 billion yuan, a 7.6% increase from the previous year.

Because of the fast-growing economy, many skilled workers in the electronics and communications industries have flooded into Dongguan. The city has now become the most crowded in Guangdong, surpassing Guangzhou with a permanent population of 6.95 million at the end of 2008, including nearly 1.75 million local residents and 5.2 million permanent immigrants from other parts of China. In addition, Dongguan has drawn many overseas Chinese to bring their careers back to China.

As for tourism, Dongguan’s long history makes it an attractive destination with many historical places of interest. The Humen Pearl River Bridge and Ke Yuan (Keyuan Garden) are the most well known. For visitors keen on Chinese culture, traditional Cantonese Opera and Hakka folk songs are two must-sees. Additionally, traditional local dance includes a unique array of performers in dragon, lion and unicorn costumes.

Dongguan is the third largest exporting region in China, next to Shanghai and Shenzhen. It is also the home to the world's largest shopping mall, South China Mall. Tourists from all over the world have started crowding into the city and enjoying the local Cantonese culture.
