Brief information on Echoing-Sand Dune  

Echoing-Sand Dune is situated 5 kilometers north of downtown Dunhuang. It takes only 10 minutes to drive there. Echoing-Sand Dune includes five dunes, which consist of red, yellow, green, white, and black sands that beautifully sparkle in the sunshine.

Visitors can ride on the backs of camels or climb to get to the top of the dune. Along the way, there are splendid sights: golden sand, the rolling desert, a tranquil lake and a beautiful sunset. The dramatic views make all the effort worthwhile. The sands are also used to relieve ailments: pile the sand on top of your body and relax as the warmth takes away fatigue. 

The trip down the dune is simple --- just slide down. When sliding down from the top, you will hear an extraordinary whistling sound or thunder under certain conditions. When the wind blows, it produces sounds from the dune, a process which people did not understand for thousands of years. Scientific research has led to the conclusion that there are many tiny holes in the sands of the dune so that as a whole it is like honeycomb. When the sand particles rub together, they produce sounds like whistling or thunder.
