Brief information on Yulin Grottoes

Yulin Grottoes, located 76 kilometers southeast of Anxi County, Gansu Province, are a branch of the Dunhuang art, and have a close relationship with Mogao Grottoes in form, contents of murals and artistic style. They are considered important caves in Gansu Province, and are also known as “Thousand Buddha Valley”.

The Yulin Grottoes were first chiseled during the time of Northern Wei, and were added to throughout the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties. In Yulin Grottoes there are a total 41 caves, and among them cave number 25 is thought to be the most impressive. The murals here have precise composition as well as vivid shapes and brilliant colors, revealing the high artistic level of painting achieved in the Tang Dynasty. Scripture drawings on the southern and northern walls of this cave are perfect. The valuable ivory Buddha now being exhibited in Beijing’s Palace Museum is originally from the Yulin Grottoes, having been there for over one thousand years.
