Brief information on Labrang Monastery  



Located in the northwest of Xiahe County, Labrang Monastery was built in 1709 and is one of the Six Gelugpa Temples. Labrang Monastery was known as having 108 genera temples, and was considered as the center of the civil religion. It has preserved the best Buddhism teaching system at present. In 1982, Labrang Monastery was list as the key Cultural Relics Protection Site.
Labrang Monastery has experience more than 280 years, and has built 6 Main Assembly Halls and 84 halls successively. According to its building form, Labrang Monastery owns Tibetan architecture, architecture compounding Han People and Tibetan. On the walls inside and outside draw many murals and pictures with Buddhism content.
Labrang Monastery is a large Arts Museum as well as the center of Civil religion. There are a large number of Buddhism Sculptures in the monastery, among them, the highest is over 10 meters, and the smallest is just several inches. It is calculated that there are 262 sculptures having a height of more than 1.7 meters, and 29,000 sculptures less than 1.7 meters. Besides these sculptures , there are also many fine arts of Tibetan Buddhism, such as murals, pictures, embroidery etc. Must of them are with content of Buddhism, delicate characters, ingenious forms.
In 1980, the Labrang Monastery was open to the public and people pay more attention to this cultural relic, which attracts visitors from home and abroad.
