Guangzhou History
Guangzhou is a richly historical city with a history stretching back more than 2000 years. As far back as the Zhou Dynasty, local Baiyue people always associated with people from the Chu State, and subsequently established Chuting, the name by which Guangzhou was known during ancient times. In 214, Emperor Qin united Lingnan and founded Panyu, decreeing it as the county town of Nanhai Prefecture. Panyu was the location of modern day Guangzhou. In 226, the name Guangzhou was adopted and remained in its original parameters until 1921.
In the Qin and Han dynasties, Guangzhou was a prosperous city, and from the Han and Tang dynasties, it was the starting port of the Marine Silk Road. During the Qing Dynasty, Guangzhou was the only operational trading port in China and had regular access and contact with foreign traders and merchants.
Guangzhou was one of the original cities of China's modern revolution. It has witnessed many revolutionary uprisings, the establishment of Huangpu Military Academy and Chairman Mao Zedong’ s National Institute of Peasant Movement.
