Brief information on Guilin Landscape  

The Guilin Landscape on the 20 RMB note is only part of the scenery along the Li River. In fact, Guilin has a broad range of sights including its famed green mountains, clear waters, fantastic caves and spectacular rocks, karst caves, historical sites and stone carvings. Almost all these sights can be seen in and around the Lijiang River, where the cragged hills are covered in evergreen plants. The major hills include Elephant Trunk Hill (Xiangbi Shan), Fubo Hill, Folded Brocade Hill (Diecai Shan) and Nine Horses Fresco Hill (Jiuma Hua Shan). The caves in Guilin are karst, with twisting paths filled with scenes of stalactites and stalagmites. The most notable karst caves are Reed Flute Cave, Seven Star Cave, Crown Cave and Fengyu Cave. The stone carvings in Guilin include both inscriptions and bas-reliefs on cliffs. The inscriptions are mainly scattered on the hills in Guilin City and the bas-reliefs on Fubo Hill. The Guilin stone carvings were mostly done in the Tang and Song dynasties, although some were carved in the Qing Dynasty and during the period of the Republic of China. The subjects of the carvings were alternately travel notes, historical records, notices and so on. The one on Parrot Hill is one of the earliest city maps, and an inscription in Fubo Hill’s Huanzhu Cave is the self-portrait of Mi Fu, a well-known artist in the Northern Song Dynasty. The Wind Cave in Folded Brocade Hill includes a great many stone inscriptions. The waters in Guilin are as clear as crystal and contrast beautifully with the surrounding hills. Of the three main rivers and four lakes, the Li River is Guilin’s most stunning. The landscape of Guilin is always open for exploration.
