In the East, "Shangri-la" means an ideal living place, like the Garden of Eden or heaven in western countries. Shangri-la (Shi Wai Tao Yuan) was built according to the poetic imagery depicted in Tao Hua Yuan Ji by the famous poet Tao Yuanming in the Jin Dynasty. It is located along the Guiyang Road, about 49 km from downtown Guilin and 15 km away from Yangshuo. It boasts a charming rural location, folk customs and fascinating minority buildings and architecture.
There are two main ways to view and admire this poetic venue: By boat or on foot. Going by boat, you will understand how it must have felt arriving here hundreds of years ago, as well as fetes, hunting and enjoying the unique and colorful folk dances. However, if you choose to go by explore the minority buildings by foot, you will surely be impressed by the typical drum tower, wind and Rain Bridge, flower building, and totem, which demonstrate the stunningly ornate culture of ethnic minority groups.
Shangri-la, even more beautiful than legend, is waiting for you to explore and become entranced.
