Brief information on Tomb of Prince Jingjiang

The Tomb of Prince Jingjiang is an imperial mausoleum in which eleven princes of the Jingjiang Family were buried during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Located on the western foot of Yao Mountain on the eastern outskirts of Guilin, about 5 km form downtown Guilin, this tomb, with its power and grandeur is renowned as the finest tomb in Lingnan.

There are 300 carved stone tombs here and those buried here include eleven prices, their wives, and generals. This group of tombs is considered the largest, finest and best-preserved Prince tombs of the Ming Dynasty.

At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the emperor Ming Taizu (the first emperor of Ming Dynasty) subinfeuded his 24 sons as kings to administer different regions in China in order to strengthen the centralization of state power. As a result, King Jingjiang established his palace at the foot of Duxiu Peak. The Jingjiang Family chose this mausoleum site as their burial place.

Occupying an area of 100 square meters, the site has 300 tombs, enclosed by a rectangular red wall. As with other Chinese mausoleums, a grand sacred way leads to the inner palace with different kinds of animals and official stone statues on both sides. Three ways are on the sacred way: The middle way for the emperor, and the other two ways (on either side of the middle) for officials.  At the end of the sacred way and inside the inner palace are a Prayer Hall, used for religious and ancestral prayers and Treasure City, a resting place for the kings. The one tomb open to the public is the third king of the Jingjiang Family and his rani who revealed many precious cultural relics, including gold, silver, pottery, porcelain, jade, and other antiques.
