Haikou Overview:  Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province and called “Coconut City”, which is the largest special economic zone in China. Haikou located at the north of Hainan Island, near Qiongzhou Straits to the north and 18 sea miles away from Hai’an Town in Guangdong Province. It borders with Wenchang and Ding’an to the south, with Chengmai to the west. Covering an area of 2,304 square meters, Haikou has a population of 1.77 million. It is also the traffic hub between the inland of China and the Southeast Asia. Currently, Haikou is the unique city which has been in the list of world healthy cities and it is honored with “China Excellent Traveling City”.

Haikou Climate & Weather:  Located to the north side of tropical zone with low latitude, the climate in Haikou belongs to tropical oceanic climate, which is dry and warm in spring and hot and rainy in summer. The sunshine hour is plentiful with yearly average sunshine of above 2000 hours. The yearly average temperature is 23.8℃ and rainfall is 1664mm as well as average relative humidity of 85%. The rainfall season starts from May to Oct. and thus the best time for traveling in Haikou is from Nov. to Apr. in the next year, during which, various festivals are hold on, for example, Hainan Island Festival, Swimming Competing Across Qiongzhou Straits as well as ethnic festivals in Hainan.

Language in Haikou:  Haikou has its own dialect which belongs to Hainan dialect. It’s not easy to understand for Mandarin speakers.

Haikou Transportation:

By Air:  located at Meilan Town in Qiongshan District of Haikou, Haikou Meilan International Airport is 26 kilometers away from the center of Haikou and about 35 driving hours from the center of Haikou to the airport for CNY15 per person every single trip.

By Train:  There is a sea-crossing train line between Guangzhou and Haikou stopping at Foshan, Sanshui, Zaoqing, Maoming, Donglianjiang, west of Zhanjiang as well as Xuwen. The train station located at Xinhai country in Xiuying District of Haikou.

By Bus:  The coach starting from Haikou to nearby cities, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanning, Chongqing, Liuzhou, Nanchang, Wuhan, Yulin, Yueyang, Zhengzhou, Zhuhai, Shantou and Luzhou. And inside Haikou, there are three coach stations, East Station, West Station and south station, which are all linked to the train station in Haikou by bus.

East Station: It located at the Haifu Road and its destinations include many towns along the eastern line to Qionghai.
West Station: Its destination includes Danzhou, Baisha, Changjiang, Dongfang, Lingao, Ledong, Wuzhishan and Tunchang.
South Station: Its destination includes Chengmai, and Ding’an.

City Transportation: There are over 10 city bus lines in Haikou and the ticket fare is CNY1 per person. The bus line to Haikou train station include NO.28, No.35, No.37, No.40 operate from 06:20am to 21:30pm by charging subsection.
The flag-down fare for taxi in Haikou is CNY10 Yuan.

Water Transportation:  There are totally two ports in Haikou, Haikou Port (Xiuying Port) and Haikou New Port. The lines from Haikou to Zhanjiang, Hai’an and Shekou are opened for use currently.

Haikou Food:  Tourists will have a taste of the four famous dishes of Hainan Province here, including Wenchang Chicken, Jiaji Duck, Dongshan Mutton, and Hele Crab, as well as featured drinks including Coconut Beer, Coffee Beer, and Betelnut Beer. Local delicacies include Hainan vermicelli, chitterlings vermicelli, pork blood soup, salted vegetables, pettitoes rice, yam milk, and pachyrhizus soup and so on.

Tourist Attractions:  Haikou has a lot of tourism resources, among which the major attractions are Wugong Temple, which is “Top One Temple in Hainan”, Hairui’s Grave, Qiongtai Academy, Ma’anshan Crater Park, Dongzhaigang Red Forest which appears as “Forest on the Sea” when rising tide, Holiday Beach, Xixiu Beach, Baishamen Beach, Tropical Oceanic World and ribbon pattern park along the west bank.
