Hangzhou Travel Guide - Brief Information on Hangzhou

As the saying goes: “Above there is heaven, below there are Hangzhou and Suzhou.” Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, is the one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China. It is also a center and transport hub of Southeast China, located in the southern section of the Yangtze Delta Region, the west bank of Hangzhou Bay, the lower reaches of Qiantang River and southern side of Jing-Hang Canal, with a distance of 180 kilometers from Shanghai.. From ancient times until the present day, Hangzhou has been publicly known as a “famous ancient city”, “a land of milk and honey”, “home of silk”, “a state of cultural relic” as well as “a noted tourist destination”.

Hangzhou is one of the eight great national capitals in China, along with Xian, Luoyang, Beijing, Kaifeng, Nanjing, Anyang and Zhengzhou. Since being founded in Qin Dynasty, it has been through 2,200 years of history. Hangzhou is also one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. As early as 4,700 years ago, there were humans living and reproducing here, and they created the famous Liangzhu culture which was regarded as a dawn of human civilization. Hangzhou, originally named “Yuhang”, and “Qiantang”, was once the capital of Wuyue Kingdom from 907 to 978AD and of the Southern Song Dynasty between 960–1279AD during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period. At the very beginning of the Yuan Dynasty (in the late 13th century), the Italian traveler Marco Polo supposedly visited Hangzhou and refers to the city as "beyond dispute the finest and the noblest in the world" in his books.

Hangzhou, noted for its historic relics and natural beauty, enjoys the reputation of “the most beautiful city in China”. Although it has been through many recent urban developments, the city still retains its historical and cultural heritage. In and around Hangzhou, travelers will find the famous West Lake surrounded by forested mountains and many more other historical sites as Lin Yin Temple, Feilai Peak, and Six Harmonies Pagoda.
