Brief information on Hupao Spring (Tiger Running Spring)  

Located in the mountains between West Lake and Qiantang River, Hupao Spring ranks third in China for its water quality, just after the Jinshan Spring in Zhenjiang and Hui Spring in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province.  It is an ideal place to view the beautiful landscape and sample the delicious spring water.

Hupao Spring is also named Tiger Running Spring. Legend has it that there was once a ruler, namely Huangzhong, who lived in the spring area during the Tang Dynasty (at the beginning of 9th century). He has determined to leave the area due to the lack of an abundant water source. However, one night, a fairy came to him in a dream and told him that two tigers would bring a fountain to the area in the near future. The next day, he saw two tigers running around and scratching at the earth. Suddenly, a magic fountain appeared where the tigers had been scratching.  Thereafter, Tiger Running Spring was christened.  

In fact, the water of Hupang Spring still emanates from quartz sandstone, and is rich in minerals and transparently clear.  More importantly, the water has health-giving properties because it is rich in sodium and other organic minerals. Due to its unique fountain and water, Hupao Spring’s excellent reputation has spread far and wide. Local residents and travellers from other cities all relish the great pleasure of sipping a cup of Longjing tea made from the water of Tiger Running Spring. Indeed, Longjing tea and Hupao Spring are acknowledged as “two wonders of West Lake”. From ancient times to the present day, many renowned poets and significant figures have left written paens of praise to these local wonders.
