Brief information on Mausoleum of General Yue Fei  

Located in the Northwest corner of picturesque West Lake, the mausoleum was originally built in 1221 to commemorate a well-known national hero in Chinese history. Yue Fei was a renowned general in the war against the Jin invasion during the Southern Song Dynasty. Yue Fei gained a reputation for tactical brilliance and personal bravery after repelling successive Jin invasionstely; he was smeared and wrongly-accused by the Emperor Gaozong and his minister, Qin Hui. As a result of these specious allegations, Yue Fei was condemned to death and executed. After his death, the Southern Song Kingdom collapsed under the weight of the revelation of this treacherous conspiracy.

The whole complex of the Mausoleum of General Yue Fei includes the Shrine of Remembrance Hall, Qizhong Ancestral Hall, as well as the Tomb of Yue Fei. Walking through the gate of the mausoleum, travellers will find him in solemn repose, with towering trees on both sides of the patio. Inside the main hall, there is a sculpture of general Yue brandishing a sword, as if ready to defend his country-even in death.  There is also a tablet set above the sculpture, into which four characters are carved, stating “Returning my lost territory”; remarkably, the characters are in the original handwriting of General Yue Fei himself. At the back of the hall, many large pictures are on display and they vividly depict the life story of General Yue Fei.
