Brief information on Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum  

Southern Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum is situated at the foot of Tortoise Hill, and in the southern part of West Lake Scenic Area. It is the first museum in China to dedicate itself solely to displaying ceramic wares, and the building itself is reminiscent of the original architectural style of the Song Dynasty. The museum can be divided into two parts: exhibition hall and ancient ruin.

The exhibition hall consists of three showrooms:  The first show room displays the fine ceramic wares from past dynasties that have been unearthed at sites in and around Hangzhou City and reflect the gradual evolution of Chinese ceramic styles and designs.  The second showroom displays the history of ancient Chinese pottery and porcelain, as well as the political, social and economic developments since the foundation of the Guan Kiln in the Southern Song Dynasty. The third room features an imitation of the ancient ceramics workshop, where visitors can gain greater understanding of the crafting and production process, as well as the opportunity to create their own ceramic masterpiece under the watchful and patient guidance of the resident master workers.

Inside the ancient ruin area, visitors can find the preserved ruin of an ancient workshop (the biggest of its type in China, occupying a total area of 1,700 m²). The museum is endowed with tasteful displays, substantial content and a tranquil environment.
