Wuzhen, one of the six major ancient water towns to the south of the Yangtze River, is situated in the northeast of Hangzhou city; about 50 minutes drive from central Hangzhou.
With its black tiled, oil-painted timber framework houses, Wuzhen contrasts sharply with its white walls and gray flagging. As the town is surrounded by water, river transportation was common in ancient times, although it has become less common in modern times.
Some Ming and Qing dynasties buildings still stand in the town and are well-preserved. There are also several ancient villas and gardens. There is a small square with a high stage in the town center providing a platform for the local actors who perform Peking and flower drum operas free of charge.
Wuzhen’s standout features lie in its 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) long layout, divided into six districts. They are: Traditional Workshops District, Traditional Local-Styled Dwelling Houses District, Traditional Culture District, Traditional Food and Beverage District, Traditional Shops and Stores District, and Water Township Customs and Life District. When strolling along the alley, tourists can enjoy the atmosphere of traditional cultures and ancient features of the well-preserved water town.
