Brief information on Ice-Lantern Show  

Harbin’s world famous ice and snow festival, first held in 1963, takes place in Zhaolin Park each year. This show occupies an area of 6.5 hectares, using about 2,000 cubic meters of ice, and displaying around 1,500 ice sculptures. The festival is the world’s oldest and largest outdoor ice sculpture exhibition, and has become a popular and famous local traditional. The festival usually starts in early January and continues until the end of February.

The craftsmen in Harbin carve a wide range of ice sculptures using modern technologies and ice from the Songhua River, making an ice-lantern artform unique to northern China.

The ice sculptures are considered a ’never to be repeated fairy tale’; since no design is repeated after it has melted. Since 1985 the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival has allowed tourists not only to enjoy the Ice-Lantern Show and appreciate various ice sculptures, but also to take part in the sporting activities on the frozen Songhua River. These activities include iceboating and skating, winter swimming competitions and ice weddings, and also the Ice and Snow Entertainment Evening Parties.
