Zhongyang Street was first built in 1898 and was originally called Chinese Street. Later in 1925, its name was changed to Zhongyang Street, and it gradually developed into a prosperous pedestrian street.
Zhongyang Street starts from Flood Memorial Tower in the north to Jingwei Street in the south. There are total 71 buildings constructed in European style or in imitation of European style and 13 municipal protection buildings in Renaissance, Baroque, and Eclectic styles. Thus, it is a rare architectural art corridor and also one of the longest and biggest pedestrian streets in Asia today.
Zhongyang Street is orderly and has a beautiful environment. It is a bright spot in the scenery of Harbin because of its special European flavour, with row upon row of super commercial buildings, leisure zones with masses of blooms, and wonderful cultural life.
