Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, sits in the vast grassland to the south of the central part of the region. It is a popular destination for Mongol nomads for more than a thousand years.

Though much of its charm comes from the close connection it has to its Mongol traditions, Hohhot is growing into a modern capital. The most important industry in Hohhot is the dairy industry and it has earned Hohhot the nickname '' Dairy Capital of China ''. Some large dairy brands in China producing milk, yoghurt and cheese for the entire country are based in Hohhot. Moreover, Hohhot has also started developing electronics, IT, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy and chemicals.

Rural parts of Hohhot that are, very far from the urban areas remain the same as they were centuries before. Any visitor to Hohhot should spend some time in the grasslands that lie to the north of the city in order to know the real soul of the country. Visitors can ride on horse, camel and also watch archery, dancing and wrestling. Staying in a yurt or ger with a local Mongol family is the main highlight of a trip to Hohhot.
The annual Nadam Fair is the main attraction of the grassland life around Hohhot. It brings nomadic people from all over the region together to compete in traditional sports, discuss the business and to celebrate by dancing and singing.

The Mongol people have produced cheese and yoghurt for centuries. Milk from Mongolian horses is a precious local delicacy and is offered to the guests. A slightly pungent alcoholic drink called koumiss is yet another good try. Most of the dishes in Hohhot include mutton and the most distinctive dish is the whole roasted sheep.

The transportation in Hohhot is well organized allowing visitors to tour the city easily. Hotels and shopping centers are located in the centre of the city, where a vast array of Mongolian products comes together in an Aladdin's cave of knick-knacks and souvenirs. Mongolian woven carpets and silverware are particularly well regarded as well as the clothes made of local cashmere and various leather goods.
