Brief information on Dazhao Temple  

Dazhao Temple, also known as Wuliang Si, “the Infinite Temple”, was built during the Ming Dynasty and significantly extended toward the end of this period. It remained reasonably obscure for many years until a visit from the third Dalai Lama in 1586 during which he dedicated a large silver Sakyamuni Buddha statue. The statue stands 2.5 meters tall in the Fo Tang Hall, and is the most popular spot for visitors to the temple, leading to many people referring to the temple as Silver Buddha Temple (Yinfo Si) as a consequence. The statue is watched over by a pair of carved dragons that rest on huge golden pillars to either side of the Buddha.

The Fo Tang Hall containing the Buddha is the most important hall at the temple, but the rest of the complex is just as engaging. Built mainly using Han architectural devices, the Jing Tang to the front of the temple is a two-storey hall and pavilion which stands in front of the central section of the temple, a place intended for prayer and chanting.

The temple houses some delicate works of art, including a collection of Buddhist scripture, a mural depicting Emperor Kangxi’s visit to the temple during the Qing Dynasty, and a huge pair of proud iron lions.
