Brief information on Happy Valley Racecourse

As the first racecourse in Hong Kong (the other racecourse having been built in Sha Tin District in 1978), Happy Valley Racecourse is situated in Happy Valley, Wan Chai. It was built by the British in 1845 and used for horse racing. In 1846, the first formal horse racing event was held. Since then, horse racing-- and its concomitant and constant companion, gambling—have become very popular among Chinese residents.  Happy Valley Racecourse was expanded several times in subsequent years the completion of reconstruction work in 1995, Happy Valley Racecourse became known as one of the world’s principal lawn racecourses. Races usually take place on Wednesday evenings.

Happy Valley Racecourse was originally swampland a fact that is difficult to believe now, particularly with the many modern buildings that now surround it.  The surrounding area was also called Racecourse. The central part of Happy Valley Racecourse is a playground, and the complex also houses several football, hockey and rugby fields.
