The Overhanging Great Wall, constructed in the year of 1539 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), is an indispensable part of Chinese ancient defensive artwork in Jiayuguan Pass, which is situated seven miles to Jiayuguan City in Gansu Province. Viewing in a distance, it seems overhang in the sky, hence its name Overhanging Great Wall. At the same time, its magnificence and appearance resembles the Badaling Great Wall in Beijing, so it is also called “the Western Badaling Great Wall”.
The Overhanging Great Wall was constructed with local gravels and loess layer by layer. Therefore, it was easily worn out while exposed to the weather and damaged lack of careful protection, which leads to the length decrement from the 0.9 miles at the beginning to the 820 yards at present, and the north slope of Heishan Mountain is only 492-feet high and tilted 45 degrees with 253 yard climbing to the top. The Overhanging Great Wall consists of the main path, battlements and three observation posts. Standing on the great wall and looking far into the distance, you will see the huge desert stretching as far as the eye could see and feel the desolation and vicissitudes there.
