Jinan, also named as Quan Cheng (a city with many artesian springs), is a sub-provincial city and the capital city of Shandong Province. It is the center of culture, economy, finance and education of Shandong Province. The city has direct jurisdiction over 6 districts, 1 county-level city and 3 counties.
As a historical city with more than 2600 years history, Jinan is a cradle of Chinese civilization. The landform of Jinan features high in south and low in north. It is famed for the many artesian springs in and around the city area. The groundwater flowing from the southern mountain area spouted out and formed more than 100 artesian springs in Jinan City area. Baotu Spring, Pearl Spring, Black Tiger Spring and Five Dragons Pool are taken as the most well known.
It is said that Shun, a legendary monarch of ancient China, lived here in Jinan. Chengziya in eastern Jinan is where Longshan Culture, which took black pottery as symbol, was found in the late Neolithic Age. Tourists can find Shun Cultural Sites, Great Wall of Qi State and the most ancient stone pagoda named Simen Pagoda. In addition, Jinan is the birth place of many Chinese litterateurs.
