Kashgar History
Kashgar has experienced 2000 years been around for more than two millenia according to the historic records. In late Qin Dynasty and early Han Dynasty, Kashgar was once part of Shule, Puli, Shache, Yinai, Zihe and Xiye, which were Western Regions. From 138 B.C. to 119 B.C., Zhang Qian was sent to the Western Regions, and which then connected Kashgar with the Central Plains. In 60 B.C., the Han emperor of Han Dynasty established frontier command headquarters in Xinjiang, and making Kashgar became a part of Chinese territory. This was followed 14 years later byIn 74 A.C., the famous general Ban Chao in Eastern Han Dynasty was being appointed frontier commander in Western Regions and who was garrisoned there for 17 years.
After the reign of Emperor Taizong of Tang Dynasty, Kashgar became an important military stronghold. From the Five Dynasties to Song Dynasty, Kashgar was under the jurisdiction of Karahan Kingdom and the subsequent Western Liao Kingdom one after another. During the reign of Karahan Kingdom, Kashgar became was theits capital. In Yuan Dynasty, Kashgar was the fiefin the hands of the second son of Genghis Khan. Before opening expansion seaway seawards, Kashgar was the communications hub of the Silk Road, and was also the region of international commerce region where Chinese and foreign merchants gathered. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty, Kashgar was served as the post place palace of the grand minister consultant. Together with Shache, Kashgar was established as an administrative region. During the Republic of China, Kashgar and Shache were established as the third administrative region and the tenth administrative region. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Kashgar it was the station of the Southern Xinjiang Party Committee, Southern Xinjiang Administrative Office, Kashgar Prefectural Party Committee and Kashgar Administrative Office.
