Brief information on Tiemen Pass

Situated 8 kilometers north of Korla at the mouth of a 14 kilometer long precipitous gorge, Tiemen Pass( Iron Gate Pass)  is one of the 26 famous passes in China. It is the throat of the Silk Road and the traffic junction between northern Xinjiang and southern Xinjiang. Four Chinese characters “ Jinshan Daihe” are inscribed on the cliff beside the pass to describe how steep and precipitous the pass is.
Nearby there are two graves in which a couple died for love and freedom were buried. Tzuohla, Princess of the ancient Yanqi fell in love with Tayir a shepherd. The viperous premier caught Tayir and wanted to kill him. After knowing that, the princess rescued Tayir wisely and fled away immediately. But unfortunately it was discovered by the premier, who ordered soldiers to chase them. While trying to escape, the couple fell down the gorge.
