Lanzhou Travel Tips No 1: Binglinsi Grottoes
Located about 80 kilometers west of Lanzhou on Jinshi Hill is the Binglingsi Grottoes. Dating back to 420 AD, these grottoes are filled with Buddhist sculptures hewn into the stone along the beautiful Yellow River.
The sculptures were gradually carved over many centuries. Work done during the Song and the Ming Dynasties is regarded as the most aesthetically impressive. A series of winding walkways and stairs gives visitors the change to examine the grottoes at close range. The tallest of the statues is 27 meters high, while the smallest one is a mere 25 centimeters.
