Brief information on Lake Manasarova

Situated about 20 km southeast of Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarova is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, at an altitude of 4588 meters. With a shoreline in the shape of the full moon, it is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet, covering an area of 412 square kilometers. The clear, bright water reflecting the white clouds and snowy peaks form a beautiful scene that is indeed indescribable. In the past, there were nine temples situated around the lake to facilitate religious cultivation.

All through the ages it was thought that pilgrims should turn prayer wheels and circumambulate the lake to show their piety, as well as take a bath here, in order to gain good fortune. Legend has it that the water from the holy lake could wash away one’s sins as well as any anxiety or other spiritual discomfort. Thus every summer, people from India, Nepal and Tibet trek thousands of miles in pilgrimage and bathe in the lake, often taking some water back to their family and friends as a precious gift.
