Lhasa Nunnery, located in the middle section of South Linkuo Road, is the only nunnery in old city of Lhasa. With a history of over 500 years, it was built in the Ming Dynasty by a disciple of Tsongkhapa.

In the seventh century, the Tibetan King - Sontzen Gampo cultivated himself according to Buddhism doctrine at a natural cave near the nunnery where he prayed for dispelling the flood disaster of Lhasa River. And in the twelfth century, the miracle-working doctor Jiewabeng also practiced in the cave. Afterwards, the disciples of Tsongkhapa constructed the nunnery and expanded it for many times.

At present, Lhasa Nunnery enjoys a higher reputation both in China and abroad which has the statues of Arya Avalokiteshvara, Sontzen Gampo and the founder of the nunnery. Although it is not large, the temple is extremely clean. With beige courtyard wall, black window frames, as well as various flowers and plants, it is truly fascinating.

The sweet tea of Lhasa Nunnery is quite famous, which receives many praises on Lonely Planet. If you are interested in, please enjoy a cup of sweet tea here.
