Namutso is regarded as the “Heavenly Lake” by local Tibetans, located at the border of Damxung Baingoin counties, about 112 km from Lhasa. It is the biggest lake in Tibet and also the world’s highest lake, occupying a surface area of 1,870 square kilometers and at an altitude of 4,718 meters.
Namtso is well-known as one of the most beautiful places in Tibet, nestled among the rolling hills of Tibet’s northern plateau, so its touching beauty should not be missed by any traveler to Tibet. The water here is crystal-clear blue and legend has it that the lake water is the mulled wine dribbling from the kitchen of the Celestial Palace down to the secular world to serve as a mirror for the Celestial Lady. Namutso is defined and revered by the Tibetan Buddhist world, so thousands of pilgrims from every corner of Tibet are drawn here to walk around the lake for good fortune.
The best time to visit Namutso is from June to September each year. It is not possible to get to the lake during October, November, and December when the heavy snow seals the mountain passes.
*You can download the bilingual note to show it to a taxi driver or someone else to find your way to Namtso Lake if you plan to visit Namtso Lake and have language problems.
