Brief information on Lijiang Old Town  

Located in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, Lijiang Old Town is among the four most famous and well-preserved old towns in China. At the same time, it is the only old town which has no city walls. The old town was built at the end of the 13th century, during the Song Dynasty, situated 2,400 meters above sea level, and covers an area of 3.8 square kilometers. Lijiang Old Town is a famous town in a vital position, and houses more than 25,000 citizens in 6,200 families. Most of these are Naxi people engaged in handcraft industry and business activities such as bronze, fur, textile and wine manufacture.

Lijiang Old Town is a historical and cultural town with great value integrates the local history, culture, tradition and presents fundamental characteristics of social development at that time. The old town was built leaning against the foot of the mountain and along the river, with roads paved with red stones that are neither muddy in the rain nor dusty in the sun. Some of these stones are engraved with simple characters and pictures. The Square Street lies in the middle of the town, and the mill wheel is the symbol of the connection between the old town and the new city. Through the town runs Jade River, across which there are 354 bridges. These bridges are densely scattered with a variety styles and features, adding beauty to the old town.
