Brief information on Tiger Leaping Gorge  

Located in Naxi Autonomous County, Lijiang City, Tiger Leaping Gorge is in the upper reaches of the Golden Sand River, 5,596 meters above sea level, with a length of 18 km. The gorge is divided into three sections, namely, Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is to the east, Haba Snow Mountain is to the west in Diqing, standing 3,790 meters high, which places the gorge among the deepest gorges in the world. It is only about 30 meters across in the narrowest place. Legend has it that a tiger was running down the mountain, jumped onto a stone in a river, and then leaped to the opposite side of the river, hence its name.

The Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is the narrowest section, nine kilometers along the road from Tiger Leaping Town. There is a huge rock lying in the center of the river, which divides the rapid into two surging and roaring streams. Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is 5 km far away from the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge with a waterfall in between. There are many reefs and rocks standing in the river. The Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge is the best position to visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge for its peaceful water and vast land.
