Longsheng Minority Autonomous County is located in the northeast of Guangxi Province, and the northwest of Guilin city. With a total area of 2538 square km, the territory of the county is 78 km from south to north and 60 km from east to west. Miao, Yao, Dong, Zhuang and Han people reside in this county. Longsheng’s governance spans 7 villages and 3 towns. It is 88 km away from Guilin, and is an important tourism county.
Longsheng is in the mountainous area, and its average altitude is 700 - 800 meters. The yearly average temperature is 18.1°C, and the yearly average rainfall is 1544mm. It is neither too cold nor too hot in any particular season.
Longsheng was called Sangjiang in ancient times. It fell under the purview of Qianzhong Prefecture in Qin Dynasty. Following that, it was under Wuling Prefecture in West Han Dynasty, and under Shi’an Prefecture from Jin to Sui Dynasty. In 662, Tang Dynasty started Lingchuan County, which then heralded the birth of Longsheng County. In 1741, Ding Dynasty set up Longsheng Office, and divided it to form Guilin. In 1921, Longsheng Office was renamed Longsheng County. On August 19th, 1951, Longsheng became the autonomous area. It is the first minority autonomous county in middle and south China.
There are more than 10 groups of minorities living in Longsheng, contributing to its diverse ethnic customs. The beautiful ecological environment and the unique natural scenery make Longsheng a famous tourism destination and the national-level demonstration zone of ecological construction.
