Nanchang History

Nanchang, also called Gan, Yuzhang, or Hongdu, is one of China’s famous historical cultural cities with a history of over 2,000 years. The city has been called Nanchang since the West Han Dynasty and this name literally means 'a prosperous south part of China'. In 202 BC, the emperor Gaozu of the Han dynasty garrisoned the area and established Nanchang City. After 763, Nanchang became the provincial center of Jiangxi and began on a course of rapid growth.

In 653 AD, Tengwang Pavilion was founded in Nanchang. Two years later, Wangbo, a famous poet of the Tang dynasty, wrote the classic “Tengwang Ge Xu”, making the place famous all over the country. Tengwang has been destroyed and reconstructed many times throughout history. Today, Tengwang Pavilion still attracts numerous tourists with its unique charm.

On August 1, 1927, Nanchang was the site of a series of uprisings led by Chinese Communist Part and that date is now commemorated as the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army. The Nanchang Uprising is regarded as the first stage in the communist fight against the Kuomintang.

Since 1949 Nanchang has gradually become a large scale producer of cotton textiles and cotton yarn, as well as a center for the automotive and chemical industries.
