Brief information on Nanjing Museum

Nanjing Museum was the first, large, national comprehensive museum, located at the southern foot of Purple Mountain and on the northern side of Inner Zhongshan Gate. It covers an area of roughly 70,000 square meters.  The two exhibition halls (of history and art) in the museum are imitations of the palatial architecture of the Liao Dynasty, and occupy an area of some 35,000-square-meters.

The predecessor of Nanjing Museum was the Preparation Department of the National Central Museum, which was built in1936 according to the original proposal of the modern democratic revolutionary and educationist, Cai Yuanpei. In 1950, the National Central Museum was renamed the National Nanjing Museum.

At present, the museum owns some 420,000 pieces, 2000 of which are designated as national treasures and class cultural properties under national protection. Besides these, many unearthed articles, ethnic and foreign cultural relics, court utensils, Qing Dynasty documents, and those witnessing the surrender ceremony of the Japanese invaders are unique to the museum.
